Responsibilities
- We’re looking for a Staff Quantitative UX Researcher to help define and raise
- the quality of experiences across Etsy. You will lead a quantitative research
- and measurement practice — grounded in rigorous survey design, statistical
- analysis, and experimental methods — to help build buyer and seller experiences
- that are usable, distinctive, and polished.
- You will establish a shared, quantitatively grounded definition of experience
- quality and build the measurement systems and statistical models needed to
- assess it consistently. You’ll benchmark core Etsy buyer and seller flows using
- validated metrics and longitudinal data, identify the most consequential
- usability gaps, and help teams understand — with statistical confidence —
- whether modernization efforts are significantly improving the customer
- experience.
- This is a highly collaborative and influential individual contributor role. You
- will work across Etsy with Product, Design, Engineering, Analytics, and
- Research, translating quantitative evidence into clear priorities, standards,
- and recommendations. You will own a cross-functional measurement program, not
- simply a series of individual studies.
- This is a full-time position reporting to a Director of Research.
- What’s this team like at Etsy?
- The UX Foundations team helps Etsy build usable, distinctive, and polished
- experiences across our marketplace. The team develops the systems, patterns,
- guidance, and shared standards that enable product teams to deliver high-quality
- experiences at scale.
- This role will work across Buyer and Seller experiences rather than supporting a
- journeys, and how do we measure it quantitatively?
- Where are the most consequential usability and consistency gaps across Etsy,
- and how do we size their impact statistically?
- How do Etsy’s core buyer and seller flows compare with ecommerce experience
- standards, based on benchmarked, quantitative data?
- How can we measure — with statistically valid methods — whether modernization
- makes experiences more usable, distinctive, and polished?
- What repeatable, quantitative benchmarks and guidance will help teams make
- better product decisions?
- Define experience quality and set the quantitative research and measurement
- strategy for UX modernization across Etsy.
- Design and lead a repeatable benchmarking program for core Etsy buyer and
- seller flows, using structured surveys, validated scales, and statistical
- models to measure experiences over time and against ecommerce experience
- standards.
- Establish important baselines and success measures spanning usability, task
- completion, efficiency, customer perception, and other relevant
- experience-quality signals, using appropriate statistical methods (e.g.,
- regression, ANOVA, factor analysis) to validate and interpret them.
- Lead quantitative research — including large-scale surveys, experiments, and
- statistical modeling — complemented by qualitative methods, to identify and
- prioritize experience gaps and evaluate modernized product experiences.
- Integrate survey data, behavioral/log data, customer-experience tracking,
- competitive intelligence, and existing Etsy research into unified statistical
- analyses.
- Translate complex quantitative evidence into clear recommendations that
- influence product roadmaps, design standards, and investment decisions across
- teams.
- Create scalable statistical methods, measurement tools, reporting practices,
- and guidance that enable teams to assess experience quality consistently and
- with rigor.
- Partner with and mentor researchers across Etsy, strengthening quantitative
- and mixed-methods practice and elevating the organization’s approach to
- usability measurement.
- Of course, this is just a sample of the kinds of work this role will require.
- You should assume that your role will encompass other tasks, too, and that
- your job duties and responsibilities may change from time to time at Etsy’s
- discretion, or otherwise applicable with local law.
- 7+ years conducting product research, with a strong emphasis on quantitative
- methods.
- Deep expertise in quantitative research: survey design and psychometrics,
- sampling methodology, statistical analysis (e.g., regression, ANOVA/MANOVA,
- factor analysis), and experimental design (e.g., A/B testing), including
- interpreting comparative or longitudinal data.
- Hands-on experience building and validating measurement frameworks and
- benchmarking programs, including defining KPIs and success metrics grounded
- in statistical evidence.
- Proficiency with statistical and survey tooling (e.g., R, Python, SQL,
- Qualtrics or similar) and the judgment to choose the right quantitative —
- and, where useful, qualitative — approach to sophisticated questions.
- Deep knowledge of usability research and the ability to translate an abstract
- concept like experience quality into clear, statistically measurable
- dimensions.
- A track record of developing durable, quantitatively grounded research
- programs, not just individual study plans, across complex and ambiguous
- problem spaces.
- Ability to connect customer evidence, product data, and external signals into
- a clear point of view and actionable, data-backed recommendations.
- Strong communication and influence skills, including aligning senior partners
- and communicating statistical findings in terms of decisions, priorities, and
- tradeoffs.
- Experience with design systems, usability measurement, benchmarking, and
- large-scale UX transformation is helpful.
